UNC opened up ACC Tournament play with an efficient 6-0 win over Wake Forest to move to 1-0 in Pool B. The win was UNC's 14th straight.
The Heels broke open a scoreless game in the four run 3rd with the big hit coming on a double from Jacob Stallings that plated two runs. The Heels tacked on one more in the 5th and 8th for the final margin. On the mound Shane Taylor got the start but was pulled in the fifth after throwing 85 pitches. A combination of five pitchers finished the game with R.C. Orlan doing most of the heavy lifting with 3.2 innings. Tate Parrish faced one batter in relief of Taylor and was credited with the win.
Next up for UNC is Miami which lost to NC State despite leading 2-1 in the bottom of the 9th. Kent Emanuel will get the start for the Heels who will be looking to break a four game losing streak against Miami which dates back to the 2011 ACC Tournament. In terms of potential scenarios for UNC to reach the title game, the simplest is, "Just win baby!" Beyond that it gets complicated but ultimately it comes down to UNC beating NC State on Saturday regardless of what either the Heels or the Pack do today. A straight-up tie between UNC and NCSU is broken by the head-to-head result while a three way tie between UNC, NCSU and Miami falls back on ACC winning percentage where the Heels own the advantage.
Heels play Miami at 3:00 PM today. The game will be on Fox Sports South or ESPN3.
