Weekly Report Card: Pitt

Carolina won its homecoming game against Pitt.

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

The Heels played an up and down game against Pitt, relying on a game winning drive in the 4th quarter to win the game. This game kept Carolina's post season hopes alive and saw the resurgence of Quinshad Davis and great play of T.J. Logan as a runner. The Heels moved their record to 5-5 on the season and looked good ahead of their showdown against Duke on Thursday.

Win the game: Pass??!!?!?!??!?!?!?

This looked as if the Heels would clearly fail this assignment. Play calling throughout this game was iffy at best and terrible at certain points in the game, most notably on the first two point attempt when Mitch Trubisky threw an incompletion. This was one of the worst play calls the Heels have had all season. Marquise Williams also started the game 4-16 before completing 16 straight passes to right the ship. However, in the second half, the Heels were able to mount a successful comeback, stealing the game with a touchdown in the final minute. The Heels had low expectations entering this game, many fans thought this would be the final nail in the coffin of the Heels' lost season but Carolina proved its doubters wrong for a least one more week with a win against the Panthers.

Control the game by scoring early: C-

The Heels failed to do much offensively in the first half. Throughout most of the game the Heels showed little sustained offense, relying instead on big plays such as Ryan Switzer's long touchdown catch and run. Until the fourth quarter, the Heels looked like a misfiring machine, Marquise Williams missed Mack Hollins on multiple deep passes during this game and the two looked out of sync. The most promising thing to come from this game was the re-emergence of Quinshad Davis, the Heels seemed to have forgotten Davis in recent weeks in favor of Mack Hollins. Davis was a monster in this game with critical catch after critical catch, without him the Heels would not have won the game. It took until the fourth quarter for the Heels to come alive, but in the end they found just enough to come away with a win.

Kicking: D-

The Heels made two extra points in this game, which has apparently become an accomplishment for this team after Nick Weiler missed one at Miami. The missed extra point was one of the saddest and most hilarious plays you'll ever see on a football field. This pathetic attempt was blamed on a bad hold after the game. Carolina also can not rely on any type of field goal kicking this year, something that will continue to affect them later this season.
