UNC Women Top Duke 89-78

Rob Kinnan-USA TODAY Sports

The Tar Heel women's basketball team got UNC-Duke week off to a nice start with an 89-78 win in Durham on Monday night.

Freshman Diamon DeShields, who came to UNC as one of the most hyped women's recruits in recent years, lived up to the billing with a 30 point performance. DeShields hit five threes and was 12-20 from the floor to go with three assists and two blocks. DeShields career night almost overshadowed teammate Allisha Gray's 24 points and 10 rebounds. Xylina McDaniel also had 17 points and was 3-3 from beyond the arc.

For the game UNC hit twelve threes which was a season high and two short of the school record in what was a complete team effort for the Tar Heels. The win snapped a three game losing streak which saw the Tar Heels drop a pair of games at home to Syracuse and Miami before losing 94-91 at Georgia Tech last Thursday. Still, this is a very young team comprised mostly of freshman and sophomores. Going into Cameron Indoor Stadium and winning wire-to-wire against the 3rd ranked Blue Devils could serve as a coming of age moment for a team with plenty of potential.
