Monday Baseball Report(3/17)

UNC continue to come out on the plus side for the week going 4-1 and winning a road ACC series in the Tar Heels' final trip to College Park, MD.

UNC led off the week with a 13-3 win over George Mason. UNC rode a fair amount of timely hitting on stranding four runners on the day while scoring 13 runs. Wood Myers batted in three runs with Michael Russell and Tyler Ramirez adding a pair of RBIs each. Sophomore Taylore Cherry gave up three runs in 4.2 innings and Reilly Hovis struck out six in 3.1 innings to get the win.

In the Wednesday game, the Heels jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and got a two run home run from Alex Raburn to win 7-1 over Gardner-Webb. Luis Paula pitched six inning innings giving up four hits, one run and striking out nine. Korey Dunbar added three RBIs to help pace the offense.

Over the weekend, UNC made its final trip to College Park, MD taking two of three from the soon to be departed Maryland Terrapins. Trent Thornton pitched sevens shutout innings to move to 5-0 on the season. Mike Zengel hit a pair of home runs and Joe Dudek added one of his own to pace the Tar Heels to a 7-0 win.

In the second game, UNC left 13 runners on base and Maryland got a two out hit in the bottom of the ninth to win 3-2 over the Tar Heels. Benton Moss had another solid outing giving up just three hits and two runs despite walking five batters. Despite 11 hits, UNC could only squeeze two runs across in the loss.

The series finale saw UNC open up a 5-0 lead in the first two innings and close the game with four runs in the ninth to take the series 9-4. Zac Gallen moved to 2-1 with 5.2 inning of work and Chris McCue pitched 2.2 innings for his seventh save of the season. Michael Russell went 3-5 with two RBIs and Skye Bolt collected three RBIs.

The Heels will face their first true test in ACC play this weekend when Georgia Tech comes to Chapel Hill.
