Tar Heels in the NFL Draft Primer

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Unless you've been under a rock you probably know the NFL Draft starts tonight and will run for ten three days. The first round happens tonight with rounds two and three coming on Friday and the rest of the selections happening on Saturday.

UNC has several players who hope to hear their names called unless they are in the 6th or 7th rounds then going undrafted and picking a best fit situation is a better option. At any rate here are the seven Tar Heels considered to be draft prospects and their profiles via the NFL.com.

Player Position NFL.com Profile Projected Rd
Eric Ebron TE Link 1st
Russell Bodine C Link 3rd-4th
Kareem Martin DE Link 2nd-3rd
Bryn Renner QB Link 6th-7th
James Hurst OT Link 6th-7th
Tre Boston SS Link 5th-6th
Jabari Price CB Link 5th-6th

Much of the first night attention will be on Eric Ebron who is projected to go in the early/middle portion of the first round. Kareem Martin will likely come off the board on the second day and his departure marks the last of the Butch Davis pipeline of defensive linemen. Russell Bodine is also slated to be picked in the first four rounds.

After those three, it really becomes a crapshoot. James Hurst's injury during the Belk Bowl obviously hurt his draft stock. He was discussed as going much higher in the order prior to the season but now looks as though he will be at the opposite end of the draft. Likewise Bryn Renner's stock simply isn't that high and his best path to the NFL might be going undrafted so he can find a good landing spot.

Tre Boston and Jabari Price are interesting prospects to watch simply because they come out of a secondary that was fairly suspect in pass coverage. In some instances there was a lot left to be desired with how Price and Boston handled their assignments. Boston put up some impressive interception numbers but the overall evaluation of his play tells a different story.

The NFL Draft starts tonight at 8 PM on ESPN and the NFL Network.

UPDATE:

Eric Ebron gets his big day started early. He proposed to his girlfriend, UNC basketball player Brittany Rountree, on top of the Empire State Building.
