THB Tournament Final Four Results

Thb_countdown_tournament-championship_medium

The Final Four was an epic clash with not-so-epic results in the voting. And in somewhat expected fashion 2009 and 1984 move on.  Here are the poll results and simulation of each match-up 20 times thanks to our friends SCACC Hoops' GameSim.

#2 1984 86% #2 2008 14%

GameSim Results

UNC (1984) has won 12 times (60.0%), won by 20+ pts 3 times (15.0%)
UNC (2008) has won 8 times (40.0%), won by 20+ pts 0 times (0.0%)
The average score is UNC (1984): 79.6 - UNC (2008): 76.5, decided by less than 5 pts 8 times (40.0%)
The game has gone into overtime 0 times (0.0%)

While the simulations were given to some odd results in the earlier rounds, these two games panned out closer to the mark. 1984 wins 12 of the 20 games including three by 20 or more points. That lends itself to an advantage of 3.1 points in the average score. Eight of the 20 contests were decided by five points or less. The poll vote was a landslide for 1984.

#1 2009 88% #1 2005 12%

GameSim Results

UNC (2009) has won 11 times (55.0%), won by 20+ pts 2 times (10.0%)
UNC (2005) has won 9 times (45.0%), won by 20+ pts 2 times (10.0%)
The average score is UNC (2009): 91.0 - UNC (2005): 90.4, decided by less than 5 pts 5 times (25.0%)
The game has gone into overtime 0 times (0.0%)

The big one. As noted in the previous post, this was dead even and the simulation reflected that. 2009 took 11 games to 2005's nine. Both teams had a pair of blowout wins and at the end of the day 2009 was a scant 0.6 points ahead of 2005 in average score. The only surprise here is there wasn't at least one or two overtime games. The poll vote was a different story with 2009 grabbing 88% of the vote.

The championship game is set between conceivably Dean Smith's best team of the THB era and Roy Williams' top squad.
