UNC Athletics Roundup

Rob Kinnan-USA TODAY Sports

Let's take a trip around the athletic department to see how other teams are doing .

Women's Soccer

The women's soccer team bounced back from a close loss to FSU in the ACC Tournament to dispatch Liberty 3-0 in the NCAA Tournament. After a scoreless first half Jessie Scarpa put UNC on the board in the 47th minute heading in a corner kick from Alex Newfield. Scarpa then assisted Meghan Buckingham on UNC's second goal to put the Heels ahead 2-0 in the 62nd minute. Newfield capped off the scoring with her 11th goal of the season in the 84th minute.

UNC's week wasn't all good news. The Tar Heels lost midfielders Joanna Boyles and Cameron Castleberry to ACL tears one same day when both were injured in last Monday;s practice.

Volleyball

The Tar Heels extended its winning streak to nine games and got measure of payback with a pair of victories over the weekend. UNC exacted revenge on Pittsburgh for a 0-3 loss in late September sweeping the Panthers 3-0 in Chapel Hill on Friday. On Sunday, UNC got a season sweep of Virginia Tech with a 3-0 win.

UNC is 14-2 in ACC play and alone in second place just one game back of Louisville. UNC has four remaining games against NC State, Virginia, Wake Forest and Duke. The Tar Heels swept all four of those teams in early October matches.

Field Hockey

UNC won two games into the NCAA Tournament to advance to the National Semifinals where the Tar Heels will face rival Duke on Friday. On Saturday, UNC staked a 4-0 lead then held on for a 4-2 win over Boston University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Nina Nortman scored a pair of goals to pace the Tar Heels.

On Sunday, Ashley Hoffman's first half goal was the only offense UNC would need in dispatching Michigan 1-0. Despite the low score, UNC largely dominated the contest outshooting the Wolverines 15-2.  Michigan did not manage a shot in the second half.

Women's Basketball

Is this going to be the UNC women's basketball version of 8-20? Sylvia Hatchell's team, which was decimated by graduation and transfers, opened the season 0-2 over the weekend.

First up was a 66-65 loss to Gardner-Webb. Jamie Cherry's 3-pointer with 7.1 seconds left game UNC a 65-64 lead. However college women's basketball has mindboggling instituted the rule from the NBA permitting a team to advance the ball to halfcourt with a timeout. Gardner-Webb did that which made getting to the basket for a game winning layup much easier.

On Sunday, Oregon visited Chapel Hill and game away with a 79-77 win. Jamie Cherry has been the one bright spot for UNC with 25 points versus Gardner-Webb and 23 points against the Ducks. The Tar Heel rotation is just six players and four player averaging 36 mpg through two games.
