IC: Dan Disch Will Not Return

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

Via Inside Carolina:

Disch is the third defensive coach to be removed from head coach Larry Fedora’s staff since the end of the 2014 regular season. Former associate head coach for defense Vic Koenning left the program in early December and promptly accepted the defensive coordinator position at Troy. Former linebackers coach Ron West was let go in January.

There are two factors at play here.

1. UNC's defense was six kinds of awful last season so anything less that a full house cleaning with the coaching staff would have been a surprise.

2. Gene Chizik has won national titles both as a head coach and a defensive coordinator. Fedora basically handed him the keys to the defense and gave him wide ranging authority to do whatever was necessary. It was also expected Chizik would bring in mostly his own staff. Ron West was the first coach to be let go now Disch.

This is also a glimpse at the seedy underbelly of recruiting. Disch, who had been instrumental in recruiting, was essentially kept long enough to make sure no recruits bolted from the 2015 class. Now they are all locked in as early enrollees or by a letter of intent, Disch was let go.

Earlier this week UNC announced the addition of John Papuchis to the defensive staff, Chizik's first hire.
