Heels Knock Off #2 Syracuse in Men's Lacrosse

UNC men'slacrosse continues to roll with a 17-15 win over #2 Syracuse before a crowd of 6000 at Fetzer Field on Saturday.UNC opened up an early 5-0 lead and led 10-6 at halftime. The lead grew to 14-7 midway through the third quarter before a Orange rally cut the lead 15-11 with 10:46 left in the game. A pair of Joey Sankey goals gave UNC a six goal lead with 9:17 left. Syracuse would go on to score four straight over the next 7:25 to make it 17-15.

Sankey's unnecessary roughness penalty gave the Orange a man-up with 1:52 left and the ball with 1:21 left after a turnovers. Syracuse was unable to capitalize and Jake Bailey forced a Orange turnover with 28 seconds remaining which allowed UNC to run out the clock.

The Tar Heels moved to 12-1 overall and 3-0 in the ACC. The win helps UNC maintain a tie with first place and #1 ranked Notre Dame. The two teams are set to meet next Saturday in South Bend. UNC's win also clinches at least 2nd place in the ACC and the #2 seed in the four team ACC Tournament which starts on Friday, April 24th in Chester, PA.

The win over Syracuse was the final home game for UNC seniors including Sankey who became UNC's all-time leading scorer breaking Marcus Holman's mark of 213 points.
