J.P. Tokoto Selected 58th by Philadelphia

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

It was actually looking pretty bleak but as the NBA Draft was winding down, the Philadelphia used the 58th pick to take former Tar Heel wing forward J.P. Tokoto. According to UNC, Tokoto is the 108th Tar Heel drafted and 19th in the Roy Williams era. He is the first second round pick since Danny Green was taken in 2009.

Heading into the evening, the mock drafts had Tokoto going somewhere in the 40s. Ultimately Tokoto had to wait a bit longer before hearing his name called. Philadelphia had several picks on the evening including the #3 overall which was used on Duke's Jahlil Okafor.  The Sixers basically spent the evening stockpiling pieces so it remains to be seen where Tokoto ends up. The Development League is likely in the short term.

Tokoto's strengths are his athleticism and defense which should afford him a shot at staying in the league. His offense has been and probably will continue to be a question. However as long as he can find the right fit and a niche for himself, that's all that really matters.
