UNC Releases Depth Chart

It's so close you can smell it.

UNC has the full depth chart here.

A few notes.

-There is a lot of experience mixed with youth on the chart. Eight true freshman appear on the two deep(three in "OR" situations.) There are five redshirt freshman on the chart including two in the kicking game.

-A lot of experience on the offensive line on the first line, not much after that.. Three juniors, a senior and sophomore will be charged with protecting Marquise Williams and opening the holes for the tailbacks. Landon Turner is a preseason All-American pick at right guard. Caleb Peterson is opposite him at the other guard positions. Jon Heck and Bentley Spain are the tackles with Lucas Crowley handling snapping duties.

The backups on the OL include two true freshman, two sophomores and a junior.

-Elijah Hood has been tabbed as the starting tailback with T.J. Logan and true freshman Ty'Son Williams getting the "OR" for second slot.

-The starters at WR are Bug Howard, Ryan Switzer and Quinshad Davis with Mack Hollins slotted behind Howard. This is somewhat irrelevant since Larry Fedora is liberal with his use of receivers.

-Kendrick Singleton will start at tight end ahead of redshirt freshman Brandon Fritts. Singleton was at WR last season.

-While the offense is plenty settled, the defense has a few instances of "OR" thrown around. The defensive line is not settled with three of the four positions bearing the "OR" for the starter and the other will a question on the second string player. Nazair Jones is an apparent lock at defensive tackle. Jeremiah Clarke is in a battle with Tyler Powell for the other DT spot.

On the ends Junior Gnonkonde or Dajuan Drennon will be the starter on one side with Mikey Bart or Jessie Rogers on the other side.

-The rest of the defense appears to be locked in with Shakeel Rashad, Jeff Schoettmer and Joe Jackson at the three linebacker spots. The corners are M.J. Stewart and Des Lawerence with Sam Smiley at free safety and Donnie Miles at strong safety. Dominique Green will back up Miles at SS. Brian Walker is the stated backup for Stewart at corner but also listed as UNC's only nickleback when UNC opts to use five defensive backs.

-On special teams, Nick Weiler has one the starting job at kicker though we can only assume he will have a pretty short leash given last season's adventures. Redshirt freshman Corbin Daly is the new punter beating out junior Joey Mangili. Logan and Romar Morris will handle kickoff returns with Switzer as the punt returner.

-Oh and Marquise Williams is starting at quarterback. No "OR" or platoon or ridiculous mystery to it. Williams is the guy.
