UNC Athletics Roundup 9/7

A look at the non-revenue sports during the past week.

Women's soccer

The women's soccer team traveled down the road to Durham for the Nike Duke Classic over the weekend. The Tar Heels played to a 1-1 tie versus California in the first game. Megan Buckingham, playing for the first time this season thanks to a broken collarbone over the summer, tallied UNC's only goal.

UNC returned to the win column on Sunday taking a 2-1 win over 15th ranked USC. UNC trailed 1-0 in the first half before Jessie Scarpa provides the equalizer in the 32nd minutes. S.A. Fristenberg's header in the 68th minute put the Tar  Heels ahead for good. UNC survived a late push from USC including a shot off the crossbar in the 89th minute.

The Tar Heels moved to 5-0-1 on the season.

Men's soccer

The men's team had a similar weekend to the women's with a 1-1 tie on Friday followed by a 2-1 win on Sunday. On Friday versus Williams & Mary, the Tribe took a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute. UNC's Jonathan Campbell responded 1:14 later with a header to tie the game at 1-1.

In Sunday's game versus Toledo, UNC took a 2-0 lead on goals from Zach Wright and Hume Tucker. Toledo responded. Toledo responded just before half to cut the UNC lead in half. After the first half goal scoring fireworks the second half was quiet with UNC taking the one goal win.

UNC now sits at 4-0-1 on the season.

Field Hockey

UNC moved to 4-0 on the season with a 5-2 win over Princeton on Friday then topping Drexel 3-0 in Sunday's action

Volleyball

After one of the most successful seasons in UNC history, the volleyball team is presently mired in a struggle to start the season. UNC dropped to 1-4 with a pair of 3-0 losses to Wisconsin and Minnesota. UNC's lone win of the season so far came versus Chicago State in Los Angeles.
