UNC welcomes Georgia Tech to Chapel Hill as the Tar Heels look to move to 2-0 in ACC play.
The Yellow Jackets are coming off a decent non-league slate that saw Georgia Tech go 10-3 with a pair of top 100 wins and only one questionable loss. The Jackets dropped a one point decision to KenPom 217th East Tennessee State. The other losses were to Villanova(#3) and Georgia(#56).
Georgia Tech has some comparable numbers to the Tar Heel on the boards. Both teams are at 39% on offensive rebounding rate and 73% on defensive rebounding rate. Senior big man Charles Mitchell does most of the damage on the boards for the Jackets. He is one of the best in the country in individual ORB%(16.6) and DRB%(30.4). Mitchell is average 11.6 rebounds per game and has pulled double-digit rebounds in 11 of Georgia Tech's 13 games. Mitchell will be the most prolific individual rebounder UNC has faced this season and with Kennedy Meeks likely still out, countering it will be that much tougher. On the flip side, Brice Johnson is better on the offensive glass than MItchell with an ORB% of 30.9.
In terms of scoring Georgia Tech has four players averaging in double figures. Marcus Georges-Hunt leads the team with 14.5 ppg. Adam Smith(13.1), MItchell(12.8) and Nick Jacobs(10.2). 60.6 points of Georgia Tech's 77.7 ppg average as a team. Much of the Jacket's scoring comes inside the arc(56.4%) and only take 29% of all shots from three. Even with the low 3PA%, Georgia Tech has shooters. Georges-Hunt is at 36.6% from three. Smith is hitting 43% of his threes and Quinton Stephens has hit 13-31 off the bench.
The three point shooting is more complimentary. Georges-Hunt is averaging 7.0 fouls drawn per 40 mins and a 70% FTR. He makes the most of those chances hitting 81% of his free throws. Mitchell is also a force inside scoring hitting 58% of his shots. Needless to say UNC's defense, which has struggled at times, will be challenged to contain Georges-Hunt driving and Mitchell's scoring in the post.
