Via UNC press release:
North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora has officially named Mitch Trubisky the starting quarterback for the Tar Heels season opener vs Georgia in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game on Sept 3.
A junior from Mentor, Ohio, Trubisky won the battle this spring to replace record-setting signal caller Marquise Williams who graduated in December.
"I thought Mitch did a good job this spring and didn't just assume he was going to be the starter. He worked extremely hard and earned it," said Fedora. "We always want to have competition at every position. Mitch is the QB with the most experience returning, but he worked hard this spring, competed every day and deserves to be the starter."
Last year, Trubisky completed 40 of 47 pass attempts for 555 yards and six touchdowns. He also rushed 16 times for 101 yards and three scores.
Trubisky arrived in Chapel Hill in 2013 as one of the top prep quarterbacks in the country. He was the player of the year in Ohio and was considered the nation's top dual threat quarterback by 247sports.com. After redshirting in 2013, he and Williams shared playing time early in the 2014 season.
Larry Fedora started spring practice by saying Mitch Trubisky wasn't necessarily the starter just because he was the backup up for Marquise Williams and Williams graduated. Fedora prefers players earn the spot but so he won't name a starter until fall camp at the earliest. However Caleb Henderson throwing a trio of interceptions in the spring game and Trubisky so obviously being the best option makes Fedora saying he doesn't know who the starter is difficult to do with a straight face.
So instead of trolling everyone with a ridiculous charade no one believes, Fedora went ahead and named Trubisky the signal caller for 2016. Be sure to check back in August when undoubtedly the depth chart will say Elijah Hood OR T.J. Logan on it.
