Can UNC sneak into the NCAA Tournament field after missing the ACC Tournament? That question and many others will be answered today at noon when the NCAA Tournament field is announced.
UNC is in a peculiar situation. The Tar Heels failed to make the ACC Tournament essentially finishing 11th in the ACC which feels like it settles the question. However the ACC was strong as a league and UNC's RPI is stout at 19th with a top ten strength of schedule. UNC's RPI could end up being what saves the Tar Heels from missing the tournament for a second straight season. When the NCAA announced the regional hosts on Sunday night there was a clear reliance on the RPI to determine those teams. If that holds true for the rest of the selections, UNC could wiggle its way into the field.
Looking at the projections Baseball America is projecting UNC will make the field but has them among the last four teams in. The BA projection has the Tar Heels traveling to Oxford, MS as a #3 seed in a region with #1 Mississippi, #2 Tulane and #4 Xavier. D1 Baseball has UNC on the outside looking in.
The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will take place at noon on ESPNU.
