The ACC set a record with 10 teams in the NCAA Tournament but the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee was unwilling to make it 11 as the Tar Heels miss the NCAA Tournament for a second straight season. The Tar Heels end the season 34-21 and 13-17 in ACC play.
There was some measure of hope for UNC given the reliance on the RPI in setting the regional hosts but that didn't quite translate for the Tar Heels who were 19th in the RPI and went 6-1 against the RPI Top 30 in non-conference play. Given those numbers the question is whether failing to make the ACC Tournament was a sticking point for the committee. In that respect the fault lies solely with the Tar Heels. Carolina missed chances to sweep Virginia Tech and Pitt, losing the former with a pop-up to the catcher with the bases loaded down 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth. The Heels also got swept at Wake Forest where salvaging just one game would have been enough to get over the top for the ACC Tournament.
Meanwhile UNC will watch Duke(who UNC swept) make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1961 and NC State host a regional not to mention East Carolina and UNCW also making the field.
