Three UNC players were taken in the second day of the MLB Draft.
Juniors Zac Gallen, Tyler Ramirez and A.J. Bogucki were selected on day two of the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Friday. Gallen was taken in the third round by St. Louis, Ramirez was a seventh-round selection by Oakland and Bogucki was an eighth-round pick by Washington. This year marks the seventh time since 2000 that at least three Tar Heels were selected in the first 10 rounds of the draft.
None of these three being taken and headed to the pros is a surprise. Zac Gallen was UNC's Friday starter and though he struggled at times this season was still considered a solid prospect. Tyler Ramirez led UNC in home runs with eight and batted .333 as a junior. The hard throwing A.J. Bogucki was UNC's best pitcher out of the bullpen.
While these departures are not unexpected(assuming they all sign) it still hurts a team struggling to regain form after two straight seasons of missing the NCAA Tournament.
