What to do and see when you move to Chapel Hill

Hey everyone, I am moving to Chapel Hill and want your suggestions of where to go and what to eat and drink.

Chapel Hill is a wonderful town, home to a great university, people, and culture. It is a town many people only dream to live in. A town people are jealous they never get to reside in. Well, I used to be one of those people, but not anymore. That’s right, one of your favorite THB writers is moving to Chapel Hill!

Now, I am no newbie to the Chapel Hill scene. I have visited many times and I have experienced a lot of things that make Chapel Hill so special. The way I look at it is there are always things to do, places to go, and things to experience that only true members of the town know about. You know, things locals know that visitors rarely get to experience.

I have decided to make a list of some things I have done or experienced and ask that you guys make some suggestions below. Help a new Chapel Hillian out!

Places to eat and drink

In no particular order, my favorite restaurants and watering holes that I have frequented upon my visits would be…

Top of the Hill

This list isn’t in any particular order, but TOPO is my favorite destination here. I’m a big fan of rooftop restaurants and I love the Blueberry Wheat with all my heart.

Time-Out

I’ve heard great things about Sunrise Biscuit, and I recently saw it on the travel channel. Still, Time-Out is my go-to food whenever I am in Chapel Hill. I’ve always flown in late and they are always open, so it has been a match made in chicken cheddar biscuit heaven. Side note: never been to Bojangles. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

He’s Not Here

Love the concept of this bar. Love the blue cups and love the outside seating. Also, who doesn’t love petting some random person’s dog while you put back 32 ounces of beer?

Spanky’s

Spanky’s is just classic. The casual atmosphere is great. I’ve watched games here and I’ve never been disappointed whenever I’ve swung by for whatever occasion it may be.

Al’s Burger Shack

My go-to burger fix. The Mookie is one of the best burgers I have ever had the pleasure of devouring.

IP3

I’ve only ever had pizza here but I hear that the cheesesteak is also delicious.

Merritt’s Store and Grill

BLT. ‘Nuff said.

Carrburritos (Not Chapel Hill technically but still good)

This is the best burrito I found in town, and their chips are feathery.

Another side note: I’m a big craft beer drinker and I would love to know what people in North Carolina consider to be the best North Carolina beers. I’ve heard Foothills Sexual Chocolate is a must try, but besides that, I don’t know too much about the craft beer scene in NC.

Places to Go

Here’s a list of some of the more memorable places I have visited. Feel free to suggest more.

Old Well

One of the first stops I made the first time I visited. It’s iconic, so yeah, a must see.

Fridays on the porch at The Carolina Inn

I actually have never been to this, but it is definitely on my list of things to do soon. I’ve always visited too late on Fridays, or it was during the winter. The concept sounds really cool though, and I plan on checking it out before it ends for the season.

Carolina Basketball Museum and Dean Dome

I have been lucky enough to visit both and see a game in the Dean Dome. I’m from Big 10 country and have been in my fair share of stadiums, but nothing quite resembles the lore of the Dean Dome.

North Carolina Botanical Garden

North Carolina is a gorgeous state and this garden is beautiful to walk through. Plus, nature is cool.

That’s it, guys. I am sure I am leaving stuff out, but that’s all I have right now. If I’m missing anything, let me know!
