THB’s football uniform challenge Championship: No. 3 vs. No. 4

Your vote determines the top UNC football uniform in program history

This series will determine the ultimate UNC football uniform combination. Each week, your vote decides which set advances to the next round.

The time has come. From Charlie Justice to Amos Lawrence and Julius Peppers, this series has chronicled, not only the best uniforms in North Carolina Tar Heels history, but the best players and moments from decades of UNC football. Now you can decide the top Carolina football uniform in program history.

In the second semifinal match up, the top-ranked 1980s uniform with the stair-stepped UNC helmet was dethroned by the “Zero Dark Thursday” set. The championship is now set. Take a look at the bracket below (click to enlarge):

In the past two weeks, the Tar Heels have donned this set. Although the results were not what UNC wanted, they did look good in losing efforts.

Once again, the balance, versatility, and details of this uniform set make it worthy of a top seed. Yet, it is the timelessness of the design that elevated it to the championship. The emphasis on the Carolina Blue and white, accentuated by the “targyle,” makes it undoubtedly a Tar Heel uniform.

There is plenty of excellent coverage from Tar Heel Blog on the past two games. You can read the recaps from the Notre Dame and Virginia games by clicking on the links.

Against Notre Dame, Myles Dorn led the defensive effort with two interceptions. On the offensive side of the ball, there was not too much to cheer about, except for the sole UNC touchdown shown below via the ACC Digital Network:

In the Virginia game, running back Michael Carter was the star for the Tar Heels. Carter racked up 157 yards on the ground and scored both of the UNC touchdowns on the day. His second touchdown was a 47-yard scamper that put the Tar Heels ahead 14-10 in the third quarter. Here are a few of his top plays via UNC Athletics:

This design was part of a complete overhaul of the football uniforms prior to the 2013 season. Heading into Larry Fedora’s second season as head coach, these uniforms added to the excitement of a new era in Carolina football history.

The black uniform represented the color of the tar on the heel. The modern design of the set was probably the biggest overall design change in the football uniform since the late 1980s.

Much of the love for this set may come from the fanfare behind its debut on “Zero Dark Thursday,” a Thursday night game in Kenan versus Miami. It was an electric atmosphere against a top ten team in a game that could have gone Carolina’s way. You can read the recap of the game here and check out the highlights below via the ACC Digital Network:

The only other time this set was worn was the next season in 2014 in another night game versus Georgia Tech. This time, the Tar Heels were victorious in a 48-43 shootout under the lights in Kenan. Check out the game recap here and view the highlights below via the ACC Digital Network:

What do you like best about these uniforms? What special moments do you remember while these uniforms were on the gridiron?
