Carolina basketball is not immune to the injury bug.

Injuries have been rampant in Chapel Hill since football season began, and it appears that problem isn’t confined to Kenan Memorial. UNC announced this afternoon that point guard Joel Berry II will miss four weeks with a broken bone in his right hand.

The Final Four Most Outstanding Player battled two injured ankles in the NCAA Tournament on the way to Carolina’s national championship. He returned for his senior season with the Tar Heels after briefly declaring for the NBA Draft.

If there is a silver lining here, UNC has time to sustain Berry’s injury now as opposed to the meat of their ACC schedule. If he can return in the estimated four-week time frame, the Heels should be able to withstand his loss, even though it is obviously a huge one.

Berry is set to be one of the best point guards in the country as a senior for the reigning national champions. Being able to stay healthy and on the court will be imperative. This is definitely not the news anyone wanted as the first games approach, but now is definitely better than later.

Get well soon, Joel.
