The ACC regular season champion North Carolina Tar Heels have been awarded a #1 seed in the 2017 NCAA Tournament. As the #1 seed in the south region, Carolina will be taking on 16th seeded Texas Southern in their first game on Friday in Greenville, South Carolina. Kentucky, UCLA, Butler, and Minnesota complete the top five seeds in the south region.
UNC’s opponent enters the tournament after going 16-2 in the SWAC conference on their way to a 23-11 overall record. They had a rough stretch in the middle of the season in which they dropped eight straight games.
There was some media speculation heading into Selection Sunday as to whether or not Duke’s run to the ACC Tournament championship would knock UNC off the 1 line. Those in favor of giving Duke a top seed felt as though their injuries and the absence of Mike Krzyzewski would be forgiven by the committee in favor of their tournament run and wins over top RPI teams.
Fortunately, that wasn’t to be. UNC got the nod for the top seed over Duke, probably because of their regular season championship in a very tough ACC. Carolina will have to contend with tough teams such as Kentucky and UCLA within their region, but it’s definitely doable for a team we’ve seen play as well as the Tar Heels have this season, if that team is the one that shows up.
Everyone on last year’s team wants revenge for how their season ended, and this is where their chance to do that begins. Let’s go win it all.
