Chance of making NCAA Tournament: Fallen into a pit(t)

Pitt’s two games against North Carolina seemingly provide a pretty accurate portrayal of the Panthers’ season as a whole.

In Chapel Hill, Pitt unexpectedly played the Tar Heels close right to the final buzzer. Then in Pittsburgh, they got blown out in a spot a lot of people thought might be a trap game for UNC. Things either go really right for Pitt, or really wrong.

The Panthers have some impressive wins on their resume. Depending on how Selection Sunday goes, they could have up to five wins over NCAA Tournament teams. They won on the road at Maryland. They beat Virginia and Florida State. They played several other good teams close, in addition to what they did in Chapel Hill.

On the other hand, they have some really strange losses. They lost to Atlantic 10 bottom feeder Duquesne at home. They lost to Clemson at home. NC State snapped a three game losing streak against the Panthers.

Kevin Stallings is going to to need to win the ACC Tournament to get the Panthers to the NCAA Tournament in his first year in Pittsburgh. Seeing as they’re the 14 seed and would need to win five games in five days, it doesn’t seem likely.

Despite that, as people saw in Chapel Hill, they definitely have the ability to put a scare in some team. They could just as easily lose in the first round to Georgia Tech by 15.
