The North Carolina Tar Heels are on a tear, winning eight in a row as they move into a weekend series against Virginia Tech. Carolina can clinch the Coastal Division this weekend with a series win. A Coastal Division title guarantees one of the top two spots in the ACC Baseball Championship in two weeks.
After an exam break, the Heels were back in action this week:
UNC Baseball Results - Week 12
|5/9/2017||vs. Davidson||W 7-6 (10)||38-9|
|5/10/2017||vs. UNC Asheville||W 16-4||39-9|
On Tuesday, Davidson jumped on Carolina early and did not relinquish the lead until the ninth. Davidson’s Will Robertson had two home runs in the game, including a two-run shot in the first to grab the lead for the Wildcats. Davidson added a couple home runs in the seventh and eighth to stretch their lead to 6-3 heading into the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, Zack Gahagan’s sacrifice fly added a run. With two outs, the Heels kept the rally alive via base hits to eventually tie the game after a Logan Warmoth RBI single. In the top of the tenth, Josh Hiatt retired the side in order. Davidson walked two UNC batters to set up Ashton McGee for a walk-off to left-center. The win over Davidson was the third straight walk-off victory for Carolina.

Carolina closed out its eight-game homestead with an eighth-straight win. Against UNC Asheville, the Heels scored three runs in the first and never looked back. McGee homered, and Brian Miller and Brandon Riley each had three hits. UNC’s propensity for late-game scoring continued in the rout of the Bulldogs as the Heels tacked on six runs in the eighth.
Logan Warmoth and J.B. Bukauskas are continuing to lead the Tar Heels this season. Yesterday, each were named as semifinalists for the top award for their positions. Bukauskas was named to the College Baseball Foundation Pitcher of the Year Award semifinalist list and Warmoth was named to the College Baseball Foundation Brooks Wallace Award semifinalist list.
Virginia Tech is led by Sam Fragale and Jack Owens. Owens leads the Hokies in batting average (.348), and his 73 hits are second-most in the ACC. Fragale has 15 homers on the year, good for third in the league. His 61 RBI are 18 more than the next highest individual on the Hokies.
Their pitching staff is Virginia Tech’s weak link. Their two top starters both have ERAs over four, and another starter has an ERA over eight. The team average ERA comes in at 5.65.
