After an NFL Draft that saw six Tar Heels get selected and several others sign as undrafted free agents, another North Carolina player is getting a chance at the next level. Despite missing out on draft selection, Mikey Bart has signed with the Arizona Cardinals.
The senior amassed 83 tackles in his four seasons at North Carolina, including 34 in 2016. His big season came as a junior in 2015 when he recorded 6.5 sacks, leading the team. He played nearly every game across his junior and senior seasons, picking up four sacks last year. He was the only defensive player to start every game in 2016.
Bart played a lot of time on the defensive line at Carolina, but looks to be slotted in as a linebacker with Arizona. Bart is a bit of a long shot to make the roster as the Cardinals return five players from last season at that position. In addition to that, Arizona selected a linebacker, Haason Reddick, in the first round with the 13th overall pick. If Bart does manage to make the team, he will likely play mostly on special teams duty.
With the signing, Bart joins fellow Tar Heel Kareem Martin in the Cardinals’ linebacking core. Martin is entering his fourth season in Arizona after he was selected in the fourth round in 2014. Fellow undrafted senior Lucas Crowley also signed with the Cardinals this offseason.
After the Bart signing, that now makes 10 Tar Heels from the 2016 team will compete to make an NFL team in some form in 2017.
