We’ve all been there: going to a Tar Heel football or basketball game when the band launches into a song we’ve heard the play a million times before. I mean, how many times can you hear “Take on Me” before you wish you pine for the in-house DJ to take over?

I feel you, and more importantly, so do the Marching Tar Heels. On Monday night, the official Twitter for the, @UNC_Bands, announced an on-line suggestion box:

The link takes you to a form where you can insert your suggestion. A few hints:

  • Most Pop Songs sound great because of the words, not the music. Strip the words away and you are going to find that the actual music is ridiculously repetitive. Pick a song that has a great hook, and understand if a minute or so gets trimmed out.
  • “UNC Vamp” is the “Hey” song.
  • Remember the audience is a mix of young kids and...older adults. The content of the song might be why they don’t play it

The Marching Tar Heels are a completely volunteer group, out there because they love UNC and enjoy performing for the fans. Trust me, as much as you love hearing those notes blare prior to “Here Comes Carolina” as the teams rush out, those kids love playing it.

So, take this chance and offer some suggestions! Imagine how you’ll feel when you are at your next game and your suggestion is played. Have at it!
