Five-star running back and Laurinburg, North Carolina, native Zamir White is set to announce where he will attend school on June 27th. The favorite to land the five-star recruit’s services is the University of Georgia, but momentum seems to have shifted towards the Tar Heels over the last several days.
White’s high school coach, Richard Bailey, discussed his big time running back with SEC Recruiting Buzz last week, and he believes that there is hope for Zamir to end up in Carolina blue.
According to 247sports’ composite, White is ranked sixth nationally and first among running backs. He is also the top recruit from the state of North Carolina. His choice will likely come down to Georgia, Carolina, Ohio State, Clemson, and Alabama, with Georgia still being seen as the most likely choice.
Bailey said that UNC “picked up momentum” since a few months ago when he didn’t believe the Heels really had a chance. The proximity to White’s family and best friend (who plays for UNC) could become one of the big factors in his decision.
One thing Bailey pointed out was that White would want assurance that the Tar Heels would commit to running the ball more than they have recently. That’s an interesting and valid position to take, considering the frustration surrounding how Elijah Hood was used by Larry Fedora in 2016.
Landing White would be a huge boost for a program that is still trying to improve its national identity as a respectable entity. It’s encouraging that Carolina is still being mentioned as a major factor so close to his announcement. If they can seal the deal later this month, everything will look much brighter for the future of Carolina football.
