North Carolina football goes navy and ditches black in new Jumpman uniforms

The Tar Heels will be regularly incorporating a darker shade of blue on the field this year.

At Carolina’s Meet the Heels event in Chapel Hill on Saturday the new Jumpman uniforms for the football team were unveiled. The move had been rumored for a while before being confirmed in infamous fashion with Michael Jordan’s “The ceiling is the roof” speech during the Senior Night game at the Dean Dome last season. Now we finally know what the finished product will look like.

The uniforms have swapped out the Swoosh, but a lot still remains the same. Argyle is still prominently featured on the new uniforms, and it’s a fantastic touch for a design that has become pretty synonymous with the University of North Carolina. An interlocking NC logo has been added to the knee pads for an extra bit of flair.

Jumpman has also added a navy combination to the rotation to pay homage to the Carolina practice shorts that Jordan wore under his shorts as a player in the NBA. It’s hard to deny that it’s a pretty sweet look, and there is no doubt that the people who come up with the color combinations each week will incorporate it well.

Noticeably absent from the reveal was any black uniform combination. The Heels tried to make black a thing with Zero Dark Thursday and Black Friday games where they broke out the black uniforms, but those games went...poorly. It’s difficult to blame a uniform for the team’s poor play, but I doubt anyone was overly anxious to see that combination again. Swapping it out for navy seems like a better choice.

Carolina is the second major program to make the move to Jumpman following Michigan’s transition to Jordan’s brand last season. The basketball team has been suited up by the brand since 1998.

You can already grab yourself some Jumpman gear ahead of the start of the season at Johnny T-Shirt. They have the Jumpman jerseys in blue and navy available for order by phone.
