UNC moved all the way up to #10 in last week’s poll following two home victories. They were punished severely for following that stretch with two losses to unranked teams in the last week, dropping almost entirely out of the top 20.
It was a tough week for teams other than Carolina, though. West Virginia took a big tumble as well. Oh yeah, and Kentucky is back after their brief little hiatus.
Villanova has continued their dominance in a season where anyone and everyone can lose at any time, and sits atop the poll for the fourth straight week. Here is the Top 25:
- Villanova: 20-1 (47)
- Virginia: 20-1 (17)
- Purdue: 21-2 (1)
- Duke: 18-3
- Michigan State: 20-3
- Xavier: 19-3
- Kansas: 17-4
- Cincinnati: 19-2
- Arizona: 18-4
- Texas Tech: 17-4
- Auburn: 19-2
- Oklahoma: 15-5
- Saint Mary’s: 21-2
- Gonzaga: 19-4
- West Virginia: 16-5
- Wichita State: 17-4
- Ohio State: 18-5
- Tennessee: 15-5
- North Carolina: 16-6
- Clemson: 17-4
- Kentucky: 16-5
- Rhode Island: 17-3
- Florida: 15-6
- Michigan: 17-6
- Arizona State: 16-5
Where is UNC?
The Tar Heels fell nine spots to #19 after dropping both their games last week. Losing to two unranked teams will do that to you. UNC will have a chance to right the ship when they take on #20 Clemson on the road Tuesday night. A win over a ranked opponent would feel pretty good coming off this ugly skid.
Biggest Winners
Texas Tech jumped into the top 10 after posting wins over Oklahoma State and South Carolina last week. The Red Raiders currently sit just 1.5 games behind Kansas for the Big 12 lead with a matchup against the Jayhawks still looming on the schedule.
Auburn climbed up from #19 last week all the way to #11 with only a loss to a good Alabama team screwing up their pristine record of 14 straight wins. They’ve gotten back in the win column in their last three straight games since then. The SEC is surprisingly good this season, and they don’t have to rely on Kentucky for that claim.
Duke lost at home but moved not at all. Yes, Virginia is good, but conventional wisdom says a loss should at least drop you a little bit. Your shocked face goes here.
Biggest Losers
The West Virginia Mountaineers fell from seventh to 15th after two straight losses to unranked TCU and previously unranked Kentucky. They have now lost four of their last five games with a win against Texas being the only thing standing between them and a six-game losing streak.
Arizona State barely snuck into the Top 25 after a loss to Utah last week. A win over Colorado likely kept them in the poll ahead of Kansas State.
Carolina fell out of the top 10 and nearly out of the top 20 after their winless week.
