We’ve got a lot to cover after a busy recruiting weekend for the Tar Heels in both major sports. With Late Night With Roy and a late-night football game, the environment was perfect for recruiting, and the staffs tried to take full advantage. We obviously can’t know how they did, but we have some hints, and we can at least cover what happened. Here we go:
Football:
- The big news for the UNC football program is that Clemson quarterback and graduate transfer-to be, Kelly Bryant, visited UNC’s campus over the weekend. He was reportedly very impressed with the campus and program. THB’s Al Hood makes the case for wanting him in Chapel Hill here. You can make your own conclusions about that, but it would take the sting out, just a little, of whiffing on several quarterback prospects in this cycle.
- Khafre Brown, brother of UNC starting receiver Dyami, also visited campus this weekend. The 4-star receiver was once considered a UNC lock, and while UNC’s chances are still good, they aren’t absolute, as he has also been seriously courted by Tennessee. He hasn’t been heard from in a while because of his rehab from knee surgery, but he’s still out there.

- Of course, the biggest news of the weekend was the official visit of Rejean “Boogie” Ellis. The 4-5 star point guard recruit came across the country to visit UNC’s campus, and based on his social media and the snippets that aren’t pay-locked, it seems like he had a pretty good time:
A fun detail from the visit: One of Ellis’ favorite things about UNC was, apparently, that the program has had no transfers in the past 8 years. With his next official visit being to Duke, we’ll see what he thinks of them.
- Joining Ellis on this cross-country excursion was 2020 five-star wing prospect Ziaire Williams, who, unlike Ellis, made the trip on his own dime. Williams is an intriguing prospect who’s clearly very interested being a Tar Heel; he’s very much in the Brandon Ingram/Justin Jackson mold that Roy Williams has coveted in the recent past. He’s definitely one to keep an eye on as Coach Williams’ efforts on this year’s class wind down.
- Day’Ron Sharpe was also in attendance. His profile is continuing to rise in the recruiting world, and he’s going to look more and more like a steal the further on his high school career goes.
- Roy Williams is, meanwhile, serious about Keion Brooks. Just several hours after Ellis finished his official visit, Williams and Davis got on a plane to Fort Wayne for an in-home visit. I still think UNC’s chances here are better than are being indicated, but we’ll see. Roy’s tough to compete with when he’s locked in. Brooks is still yet to visit campus, but should come for his official the first weekend of November.
