UNC Recruiting: Week of 10/1

We’ll be hearing some big basketball recruiting news later today, and unfortunately some of it doesn’t look great

Basketball: Spalding Hoophall Classic Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports

This was a huge week in the basketball recruiting world at large, with several commitments from high-profile recruits in the first half of it and a few more set to follow it. So far, nobody seriously involved with UNC has made a move, but that will have changed by the end of the day. Meanwhile, football recruiting keeps chugging along; high schoolers aren’t really going to be making decisions during the season.

Football:

  • A notable offer this week: 2021 pro-style quarterback prospect Drake Maye, son of Mark and brother of Luke, was offered this week by his father and brother’s alma mater (Luke hasn’t graduated yet, but hear with me) to bring his offer count to 3. Maye hasn’t been ranked yet by many scouting services, but that’s because he’s a first-year starter this year after transferring from Hough High to Myers Park. UNC’s coaches told him they needed to see him play as a starter before offering, and evidently they like what they’ve seen through 6 games, all of which Myers Park has won by a combined score of 300-34.
  • I don’t know if we’ve mentioned Ben Kiernan, one of the top punters in the class of 2019. The Wakefield (Raleigh, NC) product has no fully guaranteed scholarship offers as of yet, but holds a “blue-shirt” offer, which would require paying a semester of tuition before being placed on scholarship starting in the spring of 2020, from UNC as well as preferred walk-on offers from Florida, Penn State, and Maryland. He has been upfront about his recruiting: If he has a full scholarship offer from UNC, he will take it, regardless of his other options. But if he has scholarships from elsewhere and not from UNC, his decision will end up being a financial one. With the UNC staff’s struggles in recruiting this class, it may end up being wise to offer him sooner rather than later.

  • Cole Anthony and the already committed Armando Bacot made their official visit to Chapel Hill this past weekend. As all official visits do, it seems to have gone very well, complete with some fun social media banter between the two after the event. For more on this, check out our coverage here.
  • Next up on UNC’s official visit schedule are Boogie Ellis and Wendell Moore, who will be in town for the weekend of Late Night With Roy (which has been announced for Friday, October 12) alongside 2020 commit Day’Ron Sharpe.
  • Roy Williams has handed out another 2020 offer, this one to five-star power forward prospect Isaiah Todd. The Richmond product has just recently transferred high schools to Trinity Academy in Raleigh, so he and the UNC staff will have ample opportunity to see each other during this recruitment.
  • Josh Green will announce his college decision later today. The top-10 prospect is widely thought to be deciding between Arizona and UNC; the latter was his childhood dream school and the former is near where his parents live and has been on him for more than 3 years. Momentum seemed to be going UNC’s way until recently, but 247’s Crystal Ball picks have rapidly swung towards Arizona since Green’s announcement. It’s not impossible that they’re wrong, but I wouldn’t be too hopeful about this one. We’ll let you know more when it happens.
  • We’ve cleaned up the offer lists to leave out players who have eliminated UNC from consideration. Additionally, Inside Carolina and 247Sports now list 2020 wing Anthony Edwards as having a UNC offer. Make of this what you will, but we will leave him off our list until either he confirms it or Roy Williams makes it clear through his actions (as with Cole Anthony) that he is recruiting Edwards.
