Week 4 AP Poll: UNC falls to #11 after loss to Texas

At least the Longhorns are ranked now?

The good news is that UNC was able to leave Las Vegas with a win over a ranked opponent by taking down UCLA. Unfortunately, playing UCLA meant first losing to unranked (at the time) Texas. Now UCLA has fallen out of the top 25 and Texas has joined the ranks of the ranked. Here’s how things stand after the Thanksgiving tournaments:

AP Top 25

1. Gonzaga (32 votes for first place)

2. Kansas (31)

3. Duke (1)

4. Virginia (1)

5. Nevada

6. Tennessee

7. Michigan

8. Auburn

9. Michigan State

10. Kentucky

11. North Carolina

Where’s UNC?

Carolina fell from #7 to #11 with their loss to Texas on Thanksgiving night in Vegas. Salvaging a win against UCLA likely kept their slide from being even farther. The Tar Heels will have a chance to right the ship Wednesday night when they take on a tough Michigan team on the road in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge.

Biggest Winners

Gonzaga leapfrogged all the way up to #1 after defeating Duke in the Maui Invitational championship game. Texas spring-boarded themselves up to #17 by taking out UNC and playing Michigan State tough in Las Vegas. 5-0 Iowa jumped up to #14 after beating Oregon.

Biggest Losers

UCLA fell all the way out of the poll after back-to-back losses to Michigan State and North Carolina over Thanksgiving weekend. Clemson also fell out of the top 25 after their losses to Creighton and Nebraska. The Tigers were ranked #16 in last week’s poll.

On the Bubble

Arizona State and Clemson are just outside of the top 25, missing the bottom of the list by just six and 27 votes, respectively. They are well ahead of Furman, who is still riding the bump they got from knocking off Villanova. The rest of the field is a pretty fair distance from the ranked teams at this point while everyone tries to sort out teams that are for real from the early season pretenders.
