The great (fictional) right-handed flame thrower Ebby Calvin “Nuke” LaLoosh once said:
Anyway, a good friend of mine used to say, ‘This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball. You hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains.’ Think about that for a while.
After losing four of five the previous week, the North Carolina Tar Heels got back to their winning ways in a series sweep of Liberty last week. Unfortunately, their Tuesday game against VCU was postponed. Sometimes it rains.
For the most part, the series sweep against Liberty did little to move the Tar Heels up in the polls. In fact, they fell in the rankings in three of five. Here is a breakdown of UNC rankings in the major polls:
- D1Baseball.com Top 25: 20
- NCBWA: 21
- Baseball America: 13
- USA Today Coaches Poll: 21
- RPI: 28

First baseman Michael Busch improved his team-leading batting average (.386) and over the weekend. He remains second in the ACC with 20 RBIs. This RBI total is the most by a UNC player in the first 12 games of the season since 2000.
Brandon Martorano hit a couple of taters against Liberty and leads the team with four home runs and a .676 slugging percentage. Busch tallied one this weekend to give him three on the season.
Righty Tyler Baum added on to his team strikeout lead (25), which is good for fifth in the ACC.
Closer Josh Hiatt picked up a save last weekend, his second on the season. In nine innings of work this year, he has struck out 12 batters.
The Tar Heels travel to Louisville for a weekend series. This is the first time since 2013 that Carolina has opened conference play on the road.
The only conference series between these teams occured in 2016, and the Cardinals took the series two games to one. Since their first meeting in 1995, UNC leads the all-time series 4-3.
Here is where the 12-0 Cardinals sits in the major polls:
- D1Baseball.com Top 25: 13

Second baseman Devin Mann leads Louisville with a .390 batting average, .659 slugging percentage, and 17 RBIs. Mann, right fielder Ethan Stringer, and third baseman Justin Lavey all have two home runs each this season.
Lefty Adam Wolf leads the starting rotation for the Cardinals, and is the expected starter tonight. He has a 2.00 ERA and 20 strikeouts in three starts.
