Welp, the regular season is over, and tournament time is officially here. Smaller conferences are already punching tickets to the NCAA Tournament, and pretty soon the larger conferences will cram hundreds of games into one weekend as one big dress rehearsal for the big dance. The Heels, to keep up this extended metaphor, had a bad tech week and need to pull out all the stops in order to finish the season strong.

If it’s any reassurance, the Heels didn’t slip too bad in the poll itself.

  1. Virginia Cavaliers (65)
  2. Villanova Wildcats
  3. Xavier Musketeers
  4. Michigan State Spartans
  5. Duke Blue Devils
  6. Gonzaga Bulldogs
  7. Michigan Wolverines
  8. Cincinnati Bearcats
  9. Kansas Jayhawks
  10. Purdue Boilermakers
  11. Wichita State Shockers
  12. North Carolina Tar Heels
  13. Tennessee Volunteers
  14. Texas Tech Red Raiders
  15. Arizona Wildcats
  16. Auburn Tigers
  17. Ohio State Buckeyes
  18. West Virginia Mountaineers
  19. Clemson Tigers
  20. Saint Mary’s Gaels
  21. Houston Cougars
  22. Nevada Wolf Pack
  23. Florida Gators
  24. Miami Hurricanes
  25. Rhode Island Rams

Where is UNC?

In the 12 spot, a drop of only 3 ranks from the 9th spot they enjoyed last week. Despite losing both games since the last poll, the voters seemed to respect that both losses also came against teams ranked in the AP poll. Duke is an unchanged 5 from last week, and Miami is a new entry at 24. UNC will open its ACC Tournament campaign against either Wake Forest or Syracuse, teams against which UNC has already won once apiece. In the following round, a rematch against Miami potentially awaits.

Biggest Winners

Michigan was the unquestioned winner of this past week, seeing as the Big Ten Tournament has already concluded with they the victor. They rose 8 spots from 15 to 7 and can enjoy a stress-free week before things get really real. Their rivals in East Lansing, despite losing to the Wolverines in the semifinals, fell only two spots from 2 to 4.

Arizona and Houston were the second-highest risers, each rising 4 spots a pop, from 19 to 15 and from 25 to 21 respectively.

Biggest Losers

Despite already having clinched the Atlantic-10 regular season championship, the Rhode Island Rams finished the season on a 2 game skid and thus fell 8 spots to 25th from 17th. The Rams followed a 16-game winning streak by losing 3 out of their last 5 games. Elsewhere, Ohio State slipped 4 spots from 13 to 17 after losing its first game in the Big Ten Tournament against Penn State.

Top Games This Week

With the Big Ten Tournament already having concluded, the ACC Tournament will be what to watch this week with 5 teams in this AP Poll. Keep an eye on the Big East Tournament, too: though the Big East fields only two teams in the poll this week, they’re sitting at 2 and 3.
