At the beginning of the college baseball season, UNC struggled to find their footing throughout the first 14 games. They began the season as the 6th best team in the country, only to go .500 and, at one point, fall completely out of the top 25. The outlook for the season was questionable at best, as it was hard to tell if they could figure out a way to turn it around and right the ship. Well, not only have they done that, but they now are ranked the highest that they’ve been ranked this entire season.
D1Baseball.com released their top 25 rankings this week, and UNC finds themselves ranked at No. 4. The Diamond Heels accomplished this feat by winning 25 of their last 31 games, which included sweeps against Georgia Tech and #7 NC State. The sweep against the Wolfpack was the first time it’s ever happened in school history when playing in Raleigh, which is even more impressive when considering the fact that State was the No. 2 team in the country at the time. The Heels followed their historical performance by dominating UNC Asheville at home 11-5, stretching out their win streak to 8 games.
UNC will host Richmond tonight at Boshamer Stadium, before beginning their next series in Durham against No. 13 Duke. The Blue Devils have been on a win streak of their own, winning the last two games in their series against Virginia Tech before sweeping a two-game series against Gardner Webb. Should the Heels win the series, they will be in great position to enter the ACC tournament in the D1Baseball top 10.
