Believe it or not, there was football this past weekend that was actually pleasant to watch. It is a hard pill for UNC fans to swallow, as it is looking more and more like the Tar Heels are going to endure one of the more unapologetically insufferable seasons that it has endured since before Larry Fedora took over as head coach.
Nevertheless, there are 25 teams that (mostly) have everything going right for them, and so let’s jump into this week’s AP polls.
AP Top 25:
- Alabama (54)
- Clemson (12)
- Georgia
- Ohio State
- Oklahoma
- Wisconsin
- Auburn
- Notre Dame
- Stanford
- Washington
- Penn State
- LSU
- Virginia Tech
- West Virginia
- TCU
- Mississippi State
- Boise State
- UCF
- Michigan
- Oregon
- Miami
- USC
- Arizona State
- Oklahoma State
- Michigan State
Top Takeaways:
- South Carolina had the unfortunate pleasure of dealing with a Georgia team that is on a fast track to get back to the College Football Playoffs. The Bulldogs got everything that they wanted in the ground game as eight different players helped contribute to their 271 rushing yards. Things should get easier for South Carolina, as they will gear up to play Marshall should the weather permit this Saturday. As for Georgia, they will welcome Middle Tennessee to Athens in hopes to keep their perfect season alive.
- Ball State only lost by 8 points to Notre Dame? The Fighting Irish? The team that has a huge Touchdown Jesus watching over them? Well, we have entered an interesting timeline in college football. Ball State did everything that they needed to in hopes of handing the Irish one of the biggest upsets in their school’s history. They took the ball away three times, outplayed Notre Dame on the ground, and clawed their way back into the game late in the fourth quarter in a way that gives any Atlanta Falcons fan war flashbacks. Brian Kelly knows he has some work to do with his team, but he may want to do something fast because next time the clock may not be so kind.
- Life is hard for Jimbo Fisher. Not because of his lack of coaching success, or that he now resides in Texas (as Texas is a pretty cool state). No, life is hard for Jimbo Fisher because he can’t seem to get away from Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers. The Tigers rolled into College Station and escaped with a 2-point victory, setting themselves up nicely for when Georgia Southern comes into town Saturday. The good news for Fisher is that he has a stud in sophomore QB Kellen Mond, who threw for a blistering 430 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for an additional 33 yards. Life could be worse for good ol’ Jimbo, but I’m sure he still doesn’t want to see Dabo again for a long time.
