The opening week of college football brought with it a handful of enticing matchups. Some were competitive and exhilarating games to watch, and some were the complete opposite. Either way, these matchups gave us a better understanding of the teams playing in them, and for everyone else, there’s still plenty to uncover.
Without further ado, here are the AP college football rankings for week 2.
AP Top 25:
- Alabama (48)
- Clemson (12)
- Georgia
- Ohio State
- Wisconsin (1)
- Oklahoma
- Auburn
- Notre Dame
- Washington
- Stanford
- LSU
- Virginia Tech
- Penn State
- West Virginia
- Michigan State
- TCU
- USC
- Mississippi State
- UCF
- Boise State
- Michigan
- Miami
- Oregon
- South Carolina
- Florida
Top Takeaways:
- For the Tar Heels, the top 25 is the least of their concerns at the moment. Not that it ever was, but after a putrid offensive performance against California, the only goal right now is to reach six wins and become bowl eligible, and even that is looking like a tall task.
- Virginia Tech made a big splash in its opener by manhandling Florida State, holding the Noles to just 3 points. Their performance makes them the early favorites to win the ACC Coastal Division, and it jolted them up eight spots (#20 to #12) in the polls, the second highest rise behind LSU, who jumped fourteen spots (#25 to #11).
- Speaking of LSU, the Tigers throttled #8 Miami, who also moved fourteen spots, just not in the right direction (now #22). Miami continues to sputter, having now lost four in a row dating back to last season, and LSU is all of a sudden a player in the SEC West despite being picked to finish fifth before the season.
- Aside from Ohio State and Wisconsin switching places, the top five remained unchanged, as all five teams cruised to easy victories in week 1.
