UNC Recruiting: Week of 9/3

Ha. Called it. Also, the basketball world continues on spinnin’

Call me Nostradamus. Or, you know, somebody who knows how to read. Either works. You’ve probably guessed the football news by now if you follow this feature, but there’s some stuff to talk about in the basketball world as well. Check it out:

Football News

  • As I’ve made blindingly obvious, 3-star OL Asim Richards committed to UNC last Friday. Richards is a big, big, young man, measuring about 6’4 and 280 pounds, which has to be enticing to Larry Fedora and Chris Kapilovic. He is the first offensive line commitment of this class. Richards chose UNC over Duke and Maryland. Here’s his announcement:
  • We have talked about how important the opening stretch of football will be to help salvage this recruiting class. With the Week 1 stinker being what it was, the next three weeks are vital for Carolina football. Hopefully a majority of the awful was just typical first-week Fedora, or things could get seriously ugly.

Basketball News

  • For a primer on every 2019 recruit apparently seriously considering UNC, check out Jake Lawrence’s article from earlier this week tracking prospects’ scheduled official visits.
  • As we reported when it happened, UNC has offered California point guard Boogie Ellis. This offer comes out of relative nowhere, as there wasn’t much reported interest at all from Roy Williams’ staff before the offer. Ellis appears to be a similar player to Tre Mann, so it’s clear what the staff is prioritizing. Ellis had a phenomenal summer, and while his composite ranking is #72, 247 has updated him to a five-star, top-25 player. Other recruiting services may follow suit.
  • For those keeping track, that’s two lightning-quick scholarship offers for 2019: Keion Brooks and Ellis. Brooks scheduled an official visit despite speculation that other schools had a lead. We can only hope that Ellis follows suit despite having all 5 of his senior year officials already spoken for.
