UNC Recruiting: Mack Brown is getting started on 2020

A four-star commitment ahead of a big junior day at Kenan Stadium, and a happy correction on the basketball side

Dre Bly

We already knew that Mack Brown wasn’t going to immediately going to turn around the direction of the 2019 football recruiting cycle, with nearly 80% of prospects choosing to sign in the winter, less than a month after he accepted the head coaching job. That Brown and his new staff were able to bring UNC up to about the top 40 from outside the top 80 is an incredible feat in and of itself, and that it included a quarterback with the ability to start Day 1 is icing. It’ll be a class that is below the average that has been established in the past several years at UNC, but, particularly if paired with strong classes before and after, will not hamper the ability of the team to be competitive. The 2018 freshman class was the strongest of Larry Fedora’s career before attrition, so that box is checked. Brown’s job is 2020, and whoo boy has he started that off with a bang. Without further ado, let’s check in on the world of UNC recruiting:

Football

  • Mack Brown secured UNC’s second commitment in the class of 2020 this week with 4-star defensive back Cameron Roseman-Sinclair out of Myers Park High School in Charlotte. CRS, as we’ll call him, had a pre-existing relationship with Dre Bly and was excited by the prospect of being a shot-calling safety in Jay Bateman’s defense. Hopefully, he helps recruit teammates Moose Muhammad (receiver, son of former Carolina Panthers receiver Muhsin) and Drake Maye (quarterback, brother of Luke), both UNC targets, for the next year.
  • Speaking of Muhammad, he and several other big names in the 2020 class will be visiting UNC’s campus this weekend, including high 3-star cornerback Collin Duncan, 4-star receiver Ray Grier, junior college defensive lineman Ray Vohasek, and others. This is Brown’s first real opportunity to get some purchase in the future of this program, and this list is already a great start.
  • We’re not going to be listing 2020 commits in our tables for football, both because football commitments can be so fickle and because there are so many of them that they’d get lost. We will continue to update you whenever a new one pops up.

  • Jason Jordan of USA Today had previously reported that Anthony Edwards’ de facto top 5, IE where he would take official visits, would be Duke, Kansas, Florida State, Michigan State, and Georgia, and I relayed that information here about a month ago. It is my great pleasure to say that was a fairly egregious case of misreporting, and that Edwards’ actually top 5 now seems to be, according to 247 Sports’ Evan Daniels, UNC, Kansas, Florida State, Kentucky, and Georgia. He has already taken an official visit to Georgia, but has no further ones scheduled at this time. Regardless, it’s good to re-confirm that UNC is a player for arguably the best high schooler in the country. It should be noted that he said “I’m committing to Florida State” on Instagram Live earlier this week, but according to Daniels, that was a joke and Edwards’ commitment is still wide open.
  • Keion Brooks, meanwhile, has us all on tenterhooks, his decision having been coming “soon” for a couple of months now. My sense is that the longer this goes on, the better it is for UNC, as he seems to love the program but hate how far it would put him from his family. We’ll see.
