College Basketball AP Poll: Week of 1/7

The Tar Heels moved up a couple spots in this week’s top 25.

NCAA Basketball: North Carolina at Pittsburgh Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The December doldrums are over. After Monday night’s football national championship game, the focus of the college sports world has shifted to basketball. Conference play is underway in nearly every league, and we are just 10 weeks away from the First Four games that will kick off the 2019 NCAA Tournament.

As college basketball as a whole prepares to get fully into the swing of the season, let’s check in on where North Carolina, and the top 25 in general, are at this week.

Where is UNC?

The Tar Heels are now at #12. They moved up three spots following their wins over Harvard and Pitt last week. It’s the exact same story in the Coaches’ Poll: up to #12 after spending last week at #15

Biggest Losers

Kentucky and Marquette are tied for the biggest drop of the week, both falling five spots in the poll. The Wildcats’ drop came thanks to a loss to Alabama, while the Golden Eagles’ lost to newly ranked #24 St. John’s.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin has gone from #15 to unranked in the matter of just two weeks. After falling to #22 last week, the Badgers are gone from the top 25 thanks to a loss to Minnesota.

Biggest Winners

Iowa State vaulted into the top 20 thanks to their win over Kansas. Besides them, several teams are tied for the biggest gain at three, including UNC. Another one of those is tonight’s opponent NC State, who moved into the top 15.

On the Outside Looking In

Villanova, the aforementioned Wisconsin, and Iowa are the three highest vote getters outside the top 25 this week. None of them came that close to making it, however, as there’s a 43 vote gap between Villanova and #25 TCU. North Texas also got a single vote, thanks to their 15-1 start.
