Welcome to this week’s recruiting update! Things have been quiet on the football side of things this past week, though there was an offer that was made to a member of the 2021 class. As far as basketball goes, Roy Williams was busy this week making sure that visits were paid to a pair of guards that could help solidify their backcourt next season should things go sideways with two of their top prospects. Let’s go ahead and dive into some news.

Football

  • This week an offer was made to three-star 2021 wide receiver James “J.J.” Jones. Jones is a 6’4 185-pound player for Myrtle Beach High School, and is currently the 50th best wide receiver in his class. Currently Jones holds offers from Penn State, Vanderbilt, and West Virginia, with the only other school showing interest that hasn’t offered being South Carolina.

Basketball

  • Roy Williams and Hubert Davis traveled to New York this past Tuesday to meet up with four-star 2020 point guard R.J. Davis. This visit preceded Davis’ planned official visit for today, October 11th. Here’s what Davis told Zagsblog.com in regards to what Williams and his staff have been telling him about what they are looking for:

“They’re trying to recruit two guards because obviously Cole [Anthony] is projected to go to the NBA, so they’re looking for two guards to come in and play alongside each other,” Davis told me last month. “They’re recruiting Cade Cunningham and Caleb Love. I know they feel that was a downfall last year with Coby White being their only point guard, to have two guards next year.”

Davis’ final four schools on his list are UNC, Marquette, Georgetown, and Pitt. His visit to Chapel Hill will be his last official visit, and so there’s a decent possibility that we could get an announcement from him before the fall signing period starts.

  • Davis wasn’t the only guard that received a visit from UNC’s staff this week — four-star shooting guard Kerwin Walton received a visit from one of Roy Williams’ assistance Tuesday, according to Jake Weingarten with Stockrisers:

We don’t have any additional information on any of the schools that Walton may be honing in on at this time, but does hold scholarships from Arizona, Iowa State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Kansas, among others. As mentioned by R.J. Davis, Williams does indeed have a clear focus on filling in the backcourt when it comes to how he is recruiting for the 2020 class after locking down two of the best big men available. It’s possible that injury concerns with Jeremiah Francis and Anthony Harris have something to do with that, and that’s of course without factoring in Cole Anthony’s inevitable exodus and Christian Keeling’s eligibility expiring. Even if Williams strikes out on Cade Cunningham and/or Bryce Thompson, Davis and Walton would be good pieces to add to what is already a very good recruiting class.
