UNC Recruiting: Desmond Evans commits today and some other stuff

We will know in a matter of hours if Mack Brown will get the commitment of one of the best high schoolers in the country

Happy Desmond Evans Commitment Day! In less than three hours, we’ll know if UNC has secured the commitment of the local pass-rusher who would be UNC’s highest-rated football recruit since the turn of the century, which was about when the big companies started publicizing this stuff. Also, the 2020 basketball class is doing some heavy recruiting for Roy Williams. Let’s take a look:

Football:

  • Mercifully, Des Evans hasn’t taken as much of his time to get this done as Cole Anthony did for basketball. After taking an unofficial visit to Florida for their game against Auburn, Evans decided against taking an official visit there and scheduled a commitment for today at 2:00. Basically everybody still expects him to be a Tar Heel despite his most recent activity being with the Gators; family distance from Florida and the fact that he didn’t visit on the school’s terms seem to be why they’re not getting more of a shot. Anything is possible in recruiting, but signs are pointing the right way for UNC to secure the uber-talented defensive end. More on this at noon.
  • Preferred walk-on wide receiver Landon Stevens, from East Surry, has committed to UNC. He’s a teammate of Jefferson Boaz, who’s committed to the Heels as an athlete, and Stephen Gosnell, a receiver committed to NCSU but who the UNC staff seems to be trying to flip. Stevens has solid tape of his own, though, and seems to have good size and a penchant for going deep.

Basketball:

  • Caleb Love raised some eyebrows on Monday during this interview with Rivals when he answered, with zero hesitation, that Ziaire Williams would be the next 2020 player to commit to UNC. News around Williams himself has been limited, but we are definitely left wondering how much Love really knows. Williams would, obviously, be an incredible get at a position UNC will be looking for bodies at in the 2020-21 season.
  • Love, as well as Day’Ron Sharpe and Walker Kessler, are doing a ton of recruiting generally, though. Love and Sharpe were at the USA Basketball mini-camp, where they apparently repeatedly got in the ears of Greg Brown and Bryce Thompson, also UNC targets, to try and get them to come to Chapel Hill.
  • R.J. Davis told Rivals that he wants to make his college decision “before [his] senior year starts,” which I assume means basketball season and not the school year. He visited UNC just this past weekend, and they are strong contenders alongside Marquette and Pittsburgh for the New York point guard.
