UNC Recruiting: Week of 9/30

Roy Williams is on his way to building his best ever recruiting class

Basketball: USA Men’s Junior National Team Minicamp Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

Roy Williams has never gotten more than three consensus five-star recruits from the same class. With several months to go, he’s already equaled his best. This cycle might be special, y’all. But first, football, where things aren’t exactly quiet, either:

Football:

  • So, um... Trenton Simpson visited UNC for the Clemson game. Simpson, whom UNC had pursued for YEARS before he shot up the rankings late and committed to Auburn a few months ago, had been off the radar for most fans before this, but now there’s a whole new level of intrigue to this recruiting cycle. You never expect a guy to decommit, especially from as big a football power as Auburn, but there is at least a chance here.
  • Desmond Evans continues to be the football 2020 version of Cole Anthony, where he’s taking advantage of all the attention he deserves but doing just enough with UNC to make it pretty clear that his leader hasn’t changed: He just took an official visit to Florida, but only after cancelling an unofficial visit to South Carolina to watch the Clemson game in Chapel Hill. Still, I’d like for him to commit already.
  • Also, apparently UNC’s in the ballgame for 2021 5-star running back Will Shipley? We’ll have more on that as time goes by, but according to a premium-locked article on Inside Carolina, his recent visit to Chapel Hill was “eye-opening.”

Basketball:

  • This is shaping up to be a record recruiting year for Roy Williams after Caleb Love’s commitment: He hasn’t had two five-star bigs since the Zeller/Davis class, hasn’t had three five-star players since Jackson/Pinson/Berry, and has never had more than three five-star players in a class at UNC with guys like Ziaire Williams, Cade Cunningham, and Greg Brown heavily considering joining the Heels. So it looks like Roy’s back.
  • All indications are that everybody who was in Chapel Hill last weekend for an official or unofficial visit had a great time, but that’s usually the word after visits. We don’t have any big information for you, other than that Bryce Thompson seems interested, per his social media, which was filled with eye emojis right after Love’s commitment.
  • Speaking of Thompson, Roy Williams went in-home with him last night. More to come... Also, Kerwin Walton has scheduled a visit to UNC for the weekend of October 25th, where he’ll see the Duke football game.
  • And finally, wing/forward Earl Timberlake has cancelled his UNC visit, effectively eliminating the Heels. He’ll choose between Pittsburgh, Seton Hall, Providence, and Miami, where the ACC schools have to feel good about their chances. We’re going to see a fair bit of him, aren’t we...
