North Carolina men’s basketball has extended their third offer for the class of 2021. On Sunday, point guard Kennedy Chandler announced that the coaching staff offered him a scholarship. The announcement came via his twitter account.

Chandler is a consensus five-star prospect out of Briarcrest Christian in Memphis, TN. Currently measured at 6’1 and 160 pounds according to 247 Sports, the point guard is also a consensus top-20 overall prospect. Rivals rates him highest as the #11 overall recruit, ESPN lists him at #16, and 247 Sports slots him in at #18. All three sites have him as either the #1 or #2 point guard in the country.

It’s still unknown how many scholarships will be available in 2021 and what positions will need to be filled, but it’s obvious that Roy Williams will continue to make the point guard a position of emphasis. That’s been made abundantly clear with the commitments of R.J. Davis and Caleb Love for 2020, in addition to Jeremiah Francis on this year’s squad. Leaky Black, if he stays for all four years, will also have point guard experience by the time Chandler hypothetically arrives on campus.

That’s still a long way down the road. However, with the 2020 class all but wrapped up (pending any unexpected departures next spring), the coaching staff will now get a jump start on 2021. That’s a luxury they have not had in recent years, as they’ve constantly been playing catch-up in the spring for a multitude of reasons.

Chandler joins power forward Paolo Banchero and small forward Patrick Baldwin Jr as the only current 2021 recruits to hold scholarship offers from UNC. Both Baldwin Jr. and Banchero are consensus five-star and top-5 overall recruits.
