UNC Recruiting: Week of 12/2

Not a ton going on this week

NCAA Basketball: Ohio State at North Carolina Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

Well, I don’t have a ton for you this week. With the football early signing day not for another 12 days and Roy Williams’s season giving him enough to worry about for now (and the 2020 class all locked up), this one will be quick.

Football

  • Clyde Pinder visits campus on an official visit this weekend, after watching Florida-Florida State last weekend with the UF coaching staff. This is kind of funny, from a Florida site:

“I think I would’ve had the [Florida] offer a long time ago if I would’ve come up there when I was supposed to.”

I don’t know about y’all, but that doesn’t scream a guy wanting to stay close to home to me. It’s obviously a situation to keep monitoring, but I feel more comfortable with Pinder’s commitment than I did last week.

  • The Early Signing Day is, for most programs, the primary signing day, so expect most of UNC’s commits to sign on December 18th. Those who don’t will be exceptions, not rules, and we’ll likely go a little more in-depth as to who falls where once we get a little closer to the day.

Basketball:

  • Isn’t it nice to not really have to worry about next year’s class in December? With 5 players signed for 2020, Roy Williams can take his time evaluating the 2021 class and identifying his top targets beyond Paolo Banchero, Patrick Baldwin, Jr., and Kennedy Chandler. With big roster shakeup coming in the next two years thanks to expected early departures and graduations, every position is fair game.
  • Williams still doubtlessly enjoys having the top-ranked player from North Carolina every year, though he hasn’t been doing that as much recently: the in-state talent in 2017 was pretty bad with the highest-ranked player being 99th-ranked Lavar Batts, who went to NC State; Williams had an offer out to Devon Dotson but stopped recruiting him hard after Coby White’s early commitment; and the Heels didn’t recruit Patrick Williams in 2019, who’s now at Florida State. For 2020, things fell out between UNC and Isaiah Todd, but Day’Ron Sharpe’s ranking is nearly identical so we can count that as a semi-win. These prospects always draw attention from North Carolina-based Heels fans, so I’ll use this space to talk about what 2021 holds. Like 2017, there is no 5-star player from North Carolina in the class of 2021, which is disappointing. The best junior in the state according to the 247 Composite is point guard Carter Whitt at Leesville Road in Raleigh, ranked 55th in the country and its 8th-best point guard. So that might be a name to keep an eye on much, much later down the road.
