UNC’s 2019 recruiting is in the home stretch

Both the basketball and football programs are waiting on some key players’ decisions

It may seem obvious at this point, but in both basketball and football, there isn’t much more work to do for UNC’s coaching staffs before the classes of 2019 are finalized. Here’s a glance at what they’re looking at right now.

Football

  • After Don Chapman’s commitment, Wisdom Asaboro may be the biggest name to know here, both literally and figuratively. The defensive lineman from Matthews, NC is 6’8, 280 pounds, ultra-athletic, and only started playing football a few years ago. UNC seems to be running near the front for him, but UVA, Penn State, and Auburn are all also interested.
  • The other name to watch is that of 4-star linebacker Eugene Asante, from Chantilly, Virginia. Virginia Tech has long been considered his leader, being the first school to offer him long before recruiting services valued him, but UNC has a chance as well. The buzz is that he’s been very impressed with UNC’s defensive staff despite his obvious love for the Hokies.
  • Mack Brown has continued his recruitment of elite 2020 guys, including 5-star NC defensive end Desmond Evans and 4-star California quarterback Luca Diamont. He’s already laying groundwork to do some of the things that were lacking towards the end of the previous regime.

Basketball

  • After about 2 months of hearing that Keion Brooks’ commitment could come any day now, the latest indications are that he’s going to take more time than we thought to decide between UNC, Indiana, and Michigan State. Distance from his family seems to be the only reason he isn’t already a Heel, so the longer this takes, the better it would seem to be for UNC’s chances.
  • Anthony Edwards will officially visit UNC from next Monday to Wednesday, putting him on campus for the N.C. State game. This replaces his previously scheduled visit to Kansas, cutting the Jayhawks out of his top 5. Edwards will decide among UNC, Kentucky, Florida State, and hometown Georgia sometime during the month of February, according to Evan Daniels of 247.
  • We have articles for scholarship offers to two 2020 five-star big men, Greg Brown III and Walker Kessler. Check them out for more information, but suffice it to say that it’s far too early to know much about either’s recruitment right now.
