Carolina stays put at #8 in the Week 15 AP Poll

Not much shake-up at the top.

NCAA Basketball: Miami-Florida at North Carolina Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

The top eight teams in the poll remained the same with a few minor changes. Virginia’s loss to Duke caused them to trade spots with Gonzaga, and Michigan and Nevada traded spots as well. At the top, it’s still just a two-team discussion in terms of who deserves the #1 ranking. Duke made up some ground after completing an impressive sweep of Virginia, but Tennessee still holds the top spot, having not lost an SEC game yet.

Here are the AP rankings for week 15:

1. Tennessee (40)

2. Duke (24)

Where is UNC?

The Tar Heels did not move despite a pair of wins over NC State and Miami, as Virginia was the only team in the top 8 to lose. Carolina lost a tough one to the Cavaliers last night to start the new poll week, moving both teams into a tie for second place in the ACC behind Duke.

Biggest Winners

Kansas State had a big week that included a major win over Kansas and then an impressive road victory at Baylor. As a reward, they vaulted all the way from unranked to #18 in the polls. Florida State also enjoyed a 2-0 week which was capped off with a win over #16 Louisville. They jumped five spots from #22 to #17. Speaking of, Louisville was fortunate to not drop at all despite notching its seventh loss of the season, tied for most among teams in the top 25.

Biggest Losers

Virginia Tech had a rough week as they suffered losses to Louisville and at Clemson. They dropped 11 spots, giving them by far the biggest fall of any team in the rankings. The Hokies went from #11 all the way down to #22. The team with the second biggest drop, Iowa State, was beaten handily by an unranked TCU squad. The Cyclones moved from #17 to #23.

On the Outside Looking In

The teams right outside the top 25 are in a much different position than they were last week, when there were four teams within 30 points of cracking the rankings. This week, there is not a single team within 90 points of the top 25. Cincinnati is the closest with 76, followed by Auburn (35), Wofford (22), and Washington (17).
