ACC Power Rankings: Week of 2/18

Before a certain game happens tonight, let’s do our weekly check in on the conference.

NCAA Basketball: North Carolina at Wake Forest Nell Redmond-USA TODAY Sports

This week is a big one in the ACC. Virginia and Virginia Tech played on Monday. The Cavaliers have a matchup with ranked Louisville this weekend. Also on Saturday, UNC plays Florida State while Duke gets to try and avenge their only (so far) ACC loss against Syracuse. Oh, and I guess the Tar Heels and Blue Devils play each other tonight, too.

While things may be flipped up a bit by the time the day is over, here is this week’s edition of our power rankings.

1. #1 Duke Blue Devils (23-2, 11-1 ACC)

Hopefully after tonight, we can drop them from here, but for now, Duke still has to occupy the top spot.

Next: Tonight vs. #8 UNC

2. #3 Virginia Cavaliers (23-2, 11-2 ACC)

Their only two losses are to the team directly above them, and they just took down their ranked rival on the road

Next: Saturday at #18 Louisville

3. #8 North Carolina Tar Heels (20-5, 10-2 ACC)

A win over Duke tonight will give UNC a decent argument for at least number two, but for now the Heels are squarely third. Plenty of other conference they would be clearly the highest or second highest ranked team, the top of the ACC is just really, really good this year.

Next: Tonight at #1 Duke

4. #16 Florida State Seminoles (21-5, 8-4 ACC)

FSU has won eight straight since taking a weird loss to Boston College a couple weeks ago.

Next: Saturday at #8 North Carolina

5. #20 Virginia Tech Hokies (20-6, 9-5 ACC)

After Monday’s loss to Virginia, Tech has now lost three of their last five. The two wins in there were both by single digits against two of the conference’s bottom dwellers. The Hokies are clearly a tournament team and pretty good, but they’re also closer to falling to the middle of the pack then cracking the top three.

Next: Saturday at Notre Dame

6. #18 Louisville Cardinals (18-8, 9-4 ACC)

Yes, a two-point loss to Duke is fine and understandable on paper. However, the Cardinals are getting docked a spot in these rankings for the circumstances of how it happened alone. Yes, that was over a week ago at this point. Even still, thanks for nothing, Louisville.

Next: Tonight at Syracuse

7. NC State Wolfpack (18-8, 6-7 ACC)

Good news for the Wolfpack is that they’ve scored more than 24 points in every half since that infamous Virginia Tech game.

Next: Tonight vs. Boston College

8. Syracuse Orange (17-8, 8-4 ACC)

The Orange appear to be solidly in the tournament right now according to most Bracketology sources.

Next: Tonight vs. #18 Louisville

9. Clemson Tigers (15-11, 5-8 ACC)

They may have lost their last three games, but it appears help is on the way.

Next: Saturday vs. Boston College

11. Boston College Eagles (13-11, 4-8 ACC)

BC has bounced back from a four-game losing streak to win their last two.

Next: Tonight at NC State

12. Miami Hurricanes (11-14, 3-10 ACC)

The Hurricanes have used their momentum from taking UNC to overtime by beating Clemson (okay), and then losing to Boston College (not okay).

Next: Saturday vs. Georgia Tech

13. Pittsburgh Panthers (12-14, 2-11 ACC)

Hey, remember when the Panthers had a pretty decent non-conference season, and then beat Louisville and Florida State? Yeah, they haven’t won since.

Next: Tonight at Georgia Tech

14. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (11-15, 3-10 ACC)

Georgia Tech is on a similarly long losing streak and their conference wins are nowhere near as good as Pitt’s. One of them will get to end their losing run tonight.

Next: Tonight vs. Pitt

14. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (13-13, 3-10 ACC)

I’ll be honest, I put together these rankings before Tuesday night’s ACC games were played. I wrote them with the assumption that Notre Dame would beat Wake Forest. That seemed like a safe assumption. However, that did not happen, and due to the annoyance that caused me, I’m dropping the Irish four spots from where I originally had them. Is that petty? Yes. Am I doing it anyway? Also yes.

Next: Saturday vs. #20 Virginia Tech

15. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (10-14, 3-10 ACC)

Nah, you’re still last, Wake.

Next: Sunday at NC State
