UNC Recruiting: Week of 2/4

We covered all the big news for Signing Day already, but what about basketball?

NCAA Basketball: N.C. State at North Carolina Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

In case you missed all our coverage of the February Signing Day as it was happening, go check that out first: our primer here, our live tracker here, our coverage of UNC’s swiping of 4-star linebacker Eugene Asante here, and a total recap here. Because of all that, we’re not going to be seeing much on the football side that you don’t already know. There’s some rumbling in basketball-land, though.

Football:

  • In case you missed it, quarterback Sam Howell, cornerback Storm Duck, safety Khadry Jackson, receiver Emery Simmons, and offensive lineman Wyatt Tunall have all enrolled early. This is particularly notable in the case of Howell, who will now have the ability to start competing for UNC’s open quarterback spot this spring rather than in the fall of his freshman year. For more on his chances, check out this breakdown.
  • Fun fact: Howell is now listed by 247 as a “dual-threat” quarterback recruit rather than as a “pro-style” prospect as he was the last time I checked. I guess the 247 staff were just really impressed by this move:

And, for the last time:

Basketball:

  • There’s been some scaremongering about Oregon “making up tremendous ground” or similar phrasing with point guard Cole Anthony, and I’m just here to remind everybody that UNC has been on the other side of that kind of thing enough times for us to know that “making up ground” rarely ever means you’ll get out in front. UNC is still definitely the presumed leader in this recruitment.
  • Anthony Edwards cancelled his UNC official visit and will announce a college choice on Monday. Add him to the list of players with whom UNC has had much more momentum pre-reclassification than post-it. He also cancelled his FSU official visit, which was his presumed destination around the time of reclassification, so it’s down to Georgia or Kentucky. Perhaps surprisingly, hometown Georgia seems to be the favorite.
  • Maybe you’ve heard about the mess surrounding Arizona’s basketball program that just got another assistant put on administrative leave. Sean Miller’s seat can’t be very comfortable right now, and given UNC’s heavy recruitment of at least two Arizona signees, you can bet they’ve got eyes on Zeke Nnaji and Josh Green in case anything blows up at the head level there. Just a thought.
