UNC Recruiting: Week of 4/15

Cole Anthony set a decision date and that still might not be the biggest news we’ve got for you.

High School Basketball: McDonald’s All American Games Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

To say that this week has seen a flurry of recruiting activity for UNC is putting it as mildly as it can. In the wake of UNC’s Spring Game on the football side and nearing the end of the school year on the basketball side, all the information that we can get ahead of commitment announcements is starting to coalesce. Let’s see what we’ve got:

Football

  • We had to wait a bit for a commitment for the 2020 class after UNC’s Spring Game, and while most of UNC’s targets, as big-time as they are, are going to wait a little while before committing anywhere, we finally got one on Thursday with 3-star tight end Kendall Karr from Belmont, NC. The 6’4, 230 pass-catcher picked UNC over schools like Auburn, LSU, Oregon, and Michigan.
  • That said, a lot of those aforementioned big-time targets are saying a lot of good things about UNC. A perusal of headlines on InsideCarolina tells us that 4-star prospects Jacolbe Cowan (DL), Malik Hornsby (QB), and Trenton Simpson (LB), among others I’m sure, came away from the Spring Game really impressed with the direction of the team. Simpson in particular has taken a lot of visits to campus since November, to the point that I’d be surprised if he didn’t commit to UNC.
  • A prospect who didn’t come to the Spring Game, Muhsin “Moose” Muhammad III, came to UNC’s campus on Thursday ahead of his trip to Oregon for their Spring Game. He’s tough to get a read on, but this is welcome news after he’d been unable to make the trip a couple of times previously.

Basketball

  • We’ll start with concrete information, the bulk of which you’ll see in Jake’s article from yesterday: Graduate transfer candidates Christian Keeling (shooting guard) and Justin Pierce (small forward), along with high school senior Anthony Harris (point guard) have scheduled official visits to UNC: Keeling and Harris will visit around the 23rd, while Pierce will come on the 28th. Roy Williams will visit Keeling in-home before his visit, according to Dan McDonald of Rivals.
  • We haven’t mentioned Harris here before, and that’s because he committed to Virginia Tech back in October and signed with them in December. He’s available now because of Buzz Williams’ departure for Texas A&M, but Roy Williams is plenty familiar with him as the high school teammate of 2020 target Jeremy Roach and the AAU teammate of Armando Bacot on Team Takeover.
  • But the bigger news might be that we finally have a date for Cole Anthony’s commitment announcement: He’ll be telling us where he’s going to play college ball on Monday, April 22nd. The information hasn’t changed: Literally every recruiting expert in the country expects him to pick UNC. The family has been trolling the country for this entire recruitment process, and this last week will be no different. This tweet from Greg Anthony, for example, is not actually anything to worry about.
  • Panther Creek player and former Penn State commit Justin McKoy decided to commit to Virginia. There’s no further news on Precious Achiuwa, but there’s been some noise (nothing substantial) around the internet linking him to Kansas.
