UNC Basketball: Does Roy Williams have something else cooking for 2019?

The 2019 class is supposed to be set...but is it?

Incoming UNC freshman Armando Bacot, the team’s unofficial Head of Recruiting, has been doing fantastic work to bolster the Tar Heels’ class around him since he committed to Carolina. Bacot has provided updates on his side job via Twitter, especially in the whirlwind time period that saw Cole Anthony, Christian Keeling, and Justin Pierce all pledge to play in Chapel Hill next season.

After Pierce announced he’d be transferring to Carolina, the Head of Recruiting put out a public service announcement to the Tar Heel faithful: his job was done.

That made sense. Pretty much all viable options were off the table at that point. UNC did have another open scholarship after Seventh Woods’ departure, but it didn’t really seem like there was anyone left to give it to.

Well, Bacot has issued another communiqué, and it’s a puzzling one.

So...not done? What could that even mean?

Five-star forward Precious Achiuwa is still uncommitted, but all signs point to him heading to Memphis. Roy Williams offered Achiuwa, of course, but the two sides haven’t seemed overly warm in quite some time.

However, Achiuwa is the only player with an offer from UNC that hasn’t committed somewhere, according to 247 sports. He announced via Twitter that he’d be announcing his decision this weekend.

ACC veteran Kerry Blackshear has been a hot transfer commodity after he decided to leave Virginia Tech, but word on the street is that he is leaning toward keeping his name in the NBA Draft instead of returning to school. There hasn’t been much to connect UNC to Blackshear either, so that one seems unlikely.

Four-star small forward Jalen Wilson, who was originally committed to Michigan, is opening his recruitment again after John Beilein’s departure for the NBA.

It doesn’t look like Williams ever offered Wilson, but he does have an open scholarship now that he maybe didn’t expect to have earlier on. Maybe that’s the one?

So who could it be then? Is the timing of Achiuwa’s announcement and Bacot’s tweet too coincidental? It would be a huge surprise if Achiuwa ended up in Carolina blue after all of this time. Does the announcement that Wilson is a free agent again on the same day Bacot tweeted that they were open for business again make too much sense?

Bacot is well-connected and has obviously heard something about someone. The Head of Recruiting has been 100% accurate to this point. We’ll just have to be patient for now. The suspense is killing me.
